On Friday, January 9, California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SC AQMD) unanimously approved (11–0) an extension of the mitigation fee for manufactured homes to comply with the low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions limit of 14 nanograms per joule (ng/J) for natural gas central furnaces. The new deadline is September 30, 2030.

The previous mitigation period expired September 30, 2025, which prevented manufactured homes with gas furnaces from being sited within SC AQMD’s jurisdiction. While all other furnace types have transitioned to the 14 ng/J standard, manufactured home furnaces continue to face unique design and space constraints.

MHI, in collaboration with California Manufactured Housing Institute, advocated for this extension to ensure continued access to manufactured homes in the region. MHI extends its appreciation to Yorba Linda Mayor Carlos Rodriguez for supporting this amendment and recognizing the critical role manufactured homes play in serving economically challenged and displaced homeowners in California — particularly those impacted by recent fires.
