Licensed manufactured home installers are a critical part of the manufactured housing industry.

The Manufactured Housing Educational Institute (MHEI) has the flexible, comprehensive training you need to launch your career in the manufactured housing industry as a licensed manufactured home installer.

MHEI offers an Initial Installation Training Course that is the first step toward an installer license in 37 states. Requirements and course content vary by state: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) oversees the manufactured home installation licensing program in 15 states: Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming. The remaining states oversee their own individual state-wide installation licensing programs.

Courses for all 37 states cover topics ranging from reading installation manuals to safely securing multi-section homes. The 12-hour course is entirely online, with mobile-friendly course access that makes it easy to complete the course on your schedule

Your next steps depend on where you are seeking the license.

These states oversee their own individual state-wide installation licensing programs:

  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Maine
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

Once you complete the course, you will receive instructions for following up with the appropriate state agency. When all the paperwork is complete, you will receive an official license and can begin installing manufactured homes in the state where you are licensed.

The 15 states where HUD administers the installation program:

  • Alaska
  • Connecticut
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Wyoming

After passing the 12-hour initial training course, receiving the certification and meeting the bond, insurance and letter of credit requirements, you must complete the following forms and return them to Tribal One, HUD’s manufactured housing installation licensing contractor.

When all the paperwork is complete, you will receive an official license and can begin installing manufactured homes in the HUD-administered states.
